Patience
Patience is khanti, one of the ten perfections (pāramī) in the Theravāda tradition. The Dhammapada calls it “the highest austerity”. It’s easy to read that as “always wait”. In practice, patience also means knowing when waiting has turned into avoidance.
The two poles
Waiting Pressing
Both are honest. Neither is the right answer.
The Tension
A reply you need hasn’t come. A colleague keeps missing the same deadline. A conversation you’ve been putting off “until the right moment” has been put off for months.
Waiting means letting things unfold, trusting the timing, and not forcing a result. Pressing means following up, raising it again, and acting before the moment passes.
Waiting can be equanimity or it can be avoidance. Pressing can be right effort or it can be the urge to make discomfort go away.
What the Tradition Says
Khantī paramaṃ tapo titikkhā: “Patience, forbearance, is the highest austerity” (Dhammapada 184). In the Kakacūpama Sutta (MN 21), the Buddha asks his monks to keep a mind of goodwill even toward someone sawing them apart limb by limb. That’s patience as endurance at its most extreme.
The tradition also warns against the opposite mistake. In the Soṇa Sutta (AN 6.55), the monk Soṇa has strained so hard in practice that his feet bleed. The Buddha asks him about the lute he used to play: a string that’s too tight won’t play in tune, and neither will one that’s too loose. Effort has to be tuned the same way.
Patience and effort aren’t opposites. Each is a way of tuning the other.
How It Shows Up in the Practice
Each day includes one Patience item: a check-in on whether you noticed this tension, a question about what you did, or a situation where you choose whether you would wait or press. Patterns places you between the two and shows the distance between what you’d choose and what you actually did.
A Practice for Today
Pick one thing you’re waiting on. Ask: If I knew it would never change on its own, would I still wait? If yes, wait on purpose. If no, press, gently, today.
