Choose Like Buddha respects your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and protect your information when you use the app.

Information We Collect

Account Information

If you choose to create an account or sign in, we may collect:

  • Name (as provided by you)
  • Email address (for email sign-in)
  • Apple ID identifier (for Sign in with Apple)
  • Google account identifier and email address (for Sign in with Google)

This information is used only to identify your account and save your progress.

Guest Mode

You may use the app without providing personal information by continuing as a guest. In guest mode, a temporary anonymous account is created to store your progress (practice answers, written reflections, statistics, and other app data) on our servers. No personal information such as name or email is collected. If you later create an account, your guest progress is preserved. If you sign out without creating an account, your guest data may become inaccessible.

App Usage Data

We collect limited app usage data to provide core features, including:

  • Your daily practice answers
  • Written reflections you choose to save
  • Daily progress and statistics
  • Breathing practice totals (cycles completed per technique)
  • Subscription status

This data is used only to display your personal progress and app functionality.

Health Information

The app provides mindfulness and decision-making guidance. We do not collect, store, or process health or fitness data about you on our servers.

You can optionally save your breathing sessions to your phone’s health app: Apple Health on iOS, or Health Connect on Android. When this is turned on in the app (Settings → Apple Health, or Settings → Health Connect):

  • The app writes each completed breathing session as a mindfulness session, recording only the session’s start and end time. In Apple Health it appears as a Mindful Session; in Health Connect as a Mindfulness session of the breathing type.
  • Access is write-only. The app requests no read permission and never reads any data from Apple Health or Health Connect.
  • Sessions are stored on your device by Apple Health or Health Connect (and in your iCloud Health data, if you have that enabled). We do not send them to our servers, share them with third parties, or use them for advertising, marketing, or analytics. Other apps can read them only if you grant those apps access in Apple Health or Health Connect.

Our use of Health Connect follows Google Play’s Health Connect permissions policy.

This sync is off by default and requires your explicit permission. You can turn it off at any time in the app, or revoke access in the Health app under Sharing → Apps (iOS) or in Health Connect under App permissions (Android). Turning it off stops future writes; sessions already written remain in Apple Health or Health Connect until you delete them there.

Any questions entered in the “Ask Buddha” feature are used only to generate responses and are not analyzed as health information.

Ask Buddha (AI-Generated Guidance)

If you use the Ask Buddha feature, the questions you submit are sent to a third-party AI service (Anthropic) to generate personalized responses inspired by Buddhist wisdom.

Your questions and the AI-generated responses are saved to your account as conversation history so you can revisit past guidance. This applies on both plans: the free plan shows your 7 most recent entries, and premium subscribers can see their full history.

You can delete individual entries or clear your entire Ask Buddha history at any time from within the app.

Notifications

The app may send local notifications to remind you about mindful practices. These notifications:

  • Are scheduled locally on your device
  • Do not collect or transmit any data
  • Can be enabled or disabled in app settings

Notification preferences are stored only on your device and are not synced to our servers.

How We Use Your Information

We use your information to:

  • Create and manage your account
  • Save and sync your progress across devices
  • Display personal progress charts
  • Provide access to premium features
  • Improve app stability and user experience

We do not use your data for advertising purposes.

Data Sharing

We do not sell, rent, or share your personal information with third parties for marketing or advertising.

Information may be shared only when necessary to:

  • Authenticate users (Sign in with Apple, Sign in with Google)
  • Process subscriptions through Apple In-App Purchases and Google Play Billing
  • Comply with legal obligations

Tracking

Choose Like Buddha does not track users across apps or websites owned by other companies. We do not use advertising identifiers.

We collect anonymized usage analytics (such as feature usage and app events) through PostHog to improve the app experience. This data does not include personal information and is not used for advertising purposes.

Data Storage and Security

We take reasonable measures to protect your information from unauthorized access, loss, or misuse. However, no method of electronic storage is completely secure.

Your Rights and Choices

  • You may use the app as a guest without providing personal information.
  • You may update or change your name in the app settings.
  • You may cancel subscriptions at any time through your Apple ID settings (iOS) or your Google Play account (Android).

Account Deletion

You can delete your account directly from the app settings.

Guest users can delete all their data using the “Delete Guest Data” option in settings.

When you delete your account or guest data:

  • Your account information is permanently removed
  • Your saved progress and personal data are deleted
  • This action cannot be undone

Some information may be retained temporarily if required by law or for legitimate business purposes.

Children’s Privacy

Choose Like Buddha is not intended for children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.

Third-Party Services

The app uses the following third-party services:

  • Apple — Sign in with Apple, In-App Purchases and subscriptions, and Apple Health (HealthKit) if you enable breathing-session sync
  • Google — Sign in with Google, Google Play billing for subscriptions on Android, and Health Connect if you enable breathing-session sync
  • Supabase — Secure cloud database for storing your account and progress data
  • PostHog — Privacy-focused analytics to understand app usage and improve features (hosted in EU)
  • Anthropic — AI service used to generate Buddhist wisdom responses in the Ask Buddha feature

These services are governed by their respective privacy policies. We do not share personal information with these services beyond what is necessary for core functionality.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Any changes will be posted on this page.
