What Would Buddha Do
When Worrying About the Future?

The mind leaps ahead — to next week, next month, next year. It builds scenarios that haven’t happened and probably never will. Meanwhile, right here, right now, life is quietly passing by unnoticed.

The Mindful Approach

Worry about the future is the mind trying to control what it cannot. The antidote isn’t optimism — it’s presence.

  • Acknowledge the worry. Don’t fight it. Say to yourself: “I’m worried about something that hasn’t happened yet.” This simple truth loosens its grip.
  • Return to what’s real. Look around. Feel your feet on the ground. The future is a thought. This moment is actual.
  • Do one thing now. If there’s something you can do today to prepare, do it. If not, the worry is just noise. Let it pass like a cloud.

A Practice for Today

Set a gentle timer for five minutes. During those five minutes, do only what’s in front of you — washing a dish, writing a sentence, taking a walk. When the mind reaches for tomorrow, gently bring it back. Five minutes of presence is more powerful than five hours of worry.
