What Would Buddha Do
When Overthinking Won't Stop?

The same thought, cycling again and again. Replaying a conversation. Worrying about tomorrow. Analyzing a decision you already made. Overthinking feels productive, but it’s just motion without direction.

The Mindful Approach

You can’t think your way out of overthinking. The exit is through the body, not the mind.

  • Name it. Simply say to yourself: “I’m overthinking.” This small act of recognition creates distance between you and the thought loop.
  • Move your body. Walk, stretch, change rooms. Physical movement breaks the mental cycle in ways willpower cannot.
  • Set a decision deadline. If you’re stuck analyzing a choice, give yourself a time limit. “I’ll decide by Thursday.” Then let your mind rest until then.

A Practice for Today

Right now, notice where your body is tense. Shoulders? Jaw? Hands? Breathe into that spot for three slow breaths. Overthinking lives in tension. When the body softens, the mind often follows.
